What is Somatics?

If you’re curious about somatics, here’s a podcast episode to listen to.

In this conversation, we dive into what somatics is, how it can support you, and a demo so you can have a sense of what it’s all about.

I hope you enjoy it!

If you’d prefer the quick synopsis of what somatics is, I’ve included it below and have done my best to keep it short…

What is somatics?

At its core, somatics refers to the body and in particular, what’s happening in the body from the inside out. Most of us are so busy with our daily lives that we don’t slow down long enough to pay attention to how we’re feeling in our bodies.

But it turns there’s a whole universe inside of us that’s not only keeping us alive and healthy, but that’s interconnected with our thoughts, emotions, and life experiences.

In the last decade, somatics has become popular because of research that shows that the body holds onto stress and trauma. Our bodies are affected by the hardships we experience, and working directly with the body can help release the past so we can move forward more easily.

While releasing this gunk is necessary for most of us, the focus on stress and trauma is only a small piece of the puzzle when it comes to somatics.

What oftentimes gets lost in the conversation about somatics is that while our bodies hold onto tension that we want to let go of, our bodies are also brilliant.

They know how to release the stress and tension that’s been accumulating inside of us.

Our bodies also know what’s needed to support our healing, both physically and emotionally.

Additionally, our bodies are the doorway to our intuition. This means they can provide an important lens to help us resolve the issues we’re dealing with at work and in our personal lives.

And lastly, our bodies influence how we’re interacting with others and our ability to acquire new interpersonal and leadership skills. Inviting the body into professional development allows for more lasting and embodied change.

Somatics provides a direct route to access and work with this wisdom held in the body.

If you’re wondering how our bodies - with their bones, muscles, and organs - can hold this type of wisdom, it’s because they’re highly connected with our energy system. Cultures all over the world recognize the potency of working with and shifting one’s energy.

Not only is it foundational for healing, but our energy system underpins how we’re showing up in our professional and personal lives. It’s akin to our internal operating system.

Because our energy system is more closely connected to our bodies than to our minds, we have to get out of our heads and into our bodies in order to work this crucial part of ourselves.

That’s why somatics and this world of the body are so important if you’re looking to unlock professional and personal growth. You have to work with the operating system.

Somatics isn’t just about letting go of stress and trauma. It’s about working with the body because it’s the doorway to feeling better, to our intuition, to cultivating interpersonal and leadership skills, and ultimately, to being able to embody our potential.

If you’d like specific examples of how somatics can unlock professional and personal development, be sure to listen to this podcast episode. And if you’re curious how somatics can support you specifically, here are two simple steps to take:

  1. Decide if you’d like more support with your career or personal life. That determines which Pathway will be the best fit for you (I offer Leadership and Personal Pathways).

  2. Schedule a prospective client consultation here where we can talk about how somatics might - or might not - support your specific interests and goals.

As you can probably tell from this description, somatics can be useful for a broad range of topics and sometimes it’s hard to know where to start. The good news is that we start small, with just one issue you’d like support with. And then we let the wisdom in your body guide us from there.
